Peace Dialogues and Peacebuilding Initiative

2025 Jonglei & Pibor Administrative Area

GREDA's Community-led Sustainable Peacebuilding Mechanisms project has made significant progress in reducing intercommunal conflicts in Jonglei State and Pibor Administrative Area. The training program for 75 local leaders has equipped participants with essential conflict resolution skills and strategies for promoting human rights and good governance.

The comprehensive curriculum covered:

  • Traditional and modern conflict resolution techniques
  • Human rights education
  • Good governance principles
  • Community mediation strategies
  • Early warning systems for conflict prevention

Participants reported a 65% reduction in violent incidents in their communities since completing the training. The project has been particularly successful in:

  • Mediating cattle-related disputes between communities
  • Facilitating the return of abducted women and children
  • Reducing revenge killings through dialogue
  • Improving farmer-herder relations

This ongoing initiative is funded by George Mason University (GMU) and Innovations in Peacebuilding International (IPI USA). The next phase will expand the training to an additional 100 community leaders and establish permanent peace committees in each participating community.
